Summary

A female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them—setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course。Rule #1: The poison must never be used to harm another woman。
Rule #2: The names of the murderer and her victim must be recorded in the apothecary’s register。

One cold February evening in 1791, at the back of a dark London alley in a hidden apothecary shop, Nella awaits her newest customer。 Once a respected healer, Nella now uses her knowledge for a darker purpose—selling well-disguised poisons to desperate women who would kill to be free of the men in their lives。 But when her new patron turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, an unexpected friendship sets in motion a string of events that jeopardizes Nella’s world and threatens to expose the many women whose names are written in her register。

In present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, reeling from the discovery of her husband’s infidelity。 When she finds an old apothecary vial near the river Thames, she can’t resist investigating, only to realize she’s found a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that haunted London over two centuries ago。 As she deepens her search, Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive。

Great story a showing how wronged women try to survive what has happened to the。 The story goes back and between the 1700s and present day。 It was also informative about an apothecary and how they did things in the past。 Very enjoyable。

Unique subject for a book。 Kept my interest。

Alternating timelines are at play here, and as usual for me when this happens I find one timeline very interesting and the other very boring。 If the whole novel had been set in Nella's apothecary shop in 1791, this would have been a much better novel。 However, I found Caroline's present day story incredibly dull and repetitive, and it really made me drag my feet in finishing the book and accounts for the low rating。 Alternating timelines are at play here, and as usual for me when this happens I find one timeline very interesting and the other very boring。 If the whole novel had been set in Nella's apothecary shop in 1791, this would have been a much better novel。 However, I found Caroline's present day story incredibly dull and repetitive, and it really made me drag my feet in finishing the book and accounts for the low rating。 。。。more

A fascinating and captivating story。 Very original plot linking a modern woman interested in English history and a women who dispensed medicines and poisons 200 years ago。 Very well written and quite readable, I suspect it will be one of the most enjoyable books I read this year。

I'm giving this a generous 3 stars since I did enjoy a good share of the 18th century timeline。 But the 21st century timeline wasn't even necessary to tell the story, with dull (bordering on whiny) characters。 This premise had so much potential, so it was a frustrating read in the end。 I'm giving this a generous 3 stars since I did enjoy a good share of the 18th century timeline。 But the 21st century timeline wasn't even necessary to tell the story, with dull (bordering on whiny) characters。 This premise had so much potential, so it was a frustrating read in the end。 。。。more

3。5。 The writing of this book was poetic and I enjoyed it。 I also loved the premise although I wish it was a bit darker and more sinister。 I really wish I could find a book that *really* takes this idea and runs with it to the dark depths of the imagination。 Either way。 It was an interesting story and I love the idea of women helping other women rid themselves of shitty men。 I will say this was a bit predictable, but sweet nonetheless。 I listened to this audiobook alllll day and finished it。 1。7 3。5。 The writing of this book was poetic and I enjoyed it。 I also loved the premise although I wish it was a bit darker and more sinister。 I really wish I could find a book that *really* takes this idea and runs with it to the dark depths of the imagination。 Either way。 It was an interesting story and I love the idea of women helping other women rid themselves of shitty men。 I will say this was a bit predictable, but sweet nonetheless。 I listened to this audiobook alllll day and finished it。 1。75x seemed a tad slow still so I can only imagine how slowly they read at regular speed。。。haha。 But overall it was a great story。 A good palette cleanser if you need to read something captivating and easy。 。。。more

The book was entertaining, but the plot points were rather weak。 There was a slight plot, but for the most part the story was pretty flat overall。 I do think the characters were enjoyable and if you have a somewhat interest in history then I could see this being enjoyable。 Furthermore, I did enjoy the somewhat non linear organization of the book and how it was executed。 Overall, I would say it was enjoyable, but nothing to knock your socks off by any means。

In "The Lost Apothecary" a woman creates poisons for other women to rid them of their husbands, fathers, brothers, boyfriends - whatever male is ruining their life。 I thought this was a DIY book。 My mistake。Still an interesting read - there are even recipes for different poisons! Maybe it's a DIY book after all。You can expect arsenic, old lace, disgruntled women, blue vials, engraved bears, dead men, modern London, a hidden room and a cuppa tea。 In "The Lost Apothecary" a woman creates poisons for other women to rid them of their husbands, fathers, brothers, boyfriends - whatever male is ruining their life。 I thought this was a DIY book。 My mistake。Still an interesting read - there are even recipes for different poisons! I really enjoyed this book。 It was better than I thought it'd be, honestly。 I loved all the characters with it and enjoyed reading from Caroline's point of view as well as she was discovering everything a bit at a time。 I enjoyed the relationship between Eliza and Nella。 There were a lot of things I wasn't really expecting to develop in the story, but I enjoyed it。 It was a magical ride taking you back centuries and linking the modern world。 I thought it was a great revelation of how the univers I really enjoyed this book。 It was better than I thought it'd be, honestly。 I loved all the characters with it and enjoyed reading from Caroline's point of view as well as she was discovering everything a bit at a time。 I enjoyed the relationship between Eliza and Nella。 There were a lot of things I wasn't really expecting to develop in the story, but I enjoyed it。 It was a magical ride taking you back centuries and linking the modern world。 I thought it was a great revelation of how the universe does have a history of repeating itself。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was another monthly book club read for me。 I enjoyed it, but it did leave me wanting more。 I also thought the end was a bit disappointing。 Why keep Eliza a secret when a big part of all of the characters’ motives was to not forget the normal people of the past? All and all though, it was fast paced, and I enjoyed the parts about Nella。

I am not even sure where to begin with this exceptional dual-timeline novel。 In 1791, apothecary Nella has devoted her life to helping women, whether with their own ailments or ridding them of problems of all sorts -- especially abusive or philandering husbands。In the present day, aspiring historian Caroline has come to London to sort her thoughts about her ailing marriage。 On a whim, she decides to go mudlarking 。。。 and finds a glass vial with, unbeknownst to Caroline, ties to Nella's shop。 Car I am not even sure where to begin with this exceptional dual-timeline novel。 In 1791, apothecary Nella has devoted her life to helping women, whether with their own ailments or ridding them of problems of all sorts -- especially abusive or philandering husbands。In the present day, aspiring historian Caroline has come to London to sort her thoughts about her ailing marriage。 On a whim, she decides to go mudlarking 。。。 and finds a glass vial with, unbeknownst to Caroline, ties to Nella's shop。 Caroline decides to research the little vial, and learns more than she bargained for。This is an exquisitely-researched book about women's roles, herbal medicine (including poisons) and 18th C。 social mores, as well as a look at the complexities of human nature and how little of *that* has changed over time。That I read such a lengthy novel in just two nights is telling; I did not want to put it down。 There are some serious twists and turns in the modern-day portion of the book that keep the reader wondering what could possibly happen next。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

I'm not sure when I put this on my TBR, but it came up fairly quickly on my library holds - and unlike so much new fiction, this barely tops 300 pages, so great for a quick read - which it was。 I liked the story and thinking it over, it is cleverly named when you consider the ways one might actually be lost。 The story ties together the story of 3 women across two time periods - Caroline, Nella and 12 year old Eliza。 I do agree with a number of previous reviewers that Caroline is a tad bit tediou I'm not sure when I put this on my TBR, but it came up fairly quickly on my library holds - and unlike so much new fiction, this barely tops 300 pages, so great for a quick read - which it was。 I liked the story and thinking it over, it is cleverly named when you consider the ways one might actually be lost。 The story ties together the story of 3 women across two time periods - Caroline, Nella and 12 year old Eliza。 I do agree with a number of previous reviewers that Caroline is a tad bit tedious, and not somewhat annoying。 I recognize what the author was trying to do, but she is hard to really like - perhaps at the end she is a bit redeeming but the way she describes her path not followed earlier on is, I don't know, overly dramatic。 It is true that many of us have paths that we did not cross for a lot of reasons - and when things don't unfold as you expect, it is only natural to question your choices。 Perhaps she is meant to be juxtaposed with Nella, who, in not completely dissimilar fashion, is left in the lurch the love of her life and it results in her going down a very different path。 And in truth, she is not particularly likeable either。 But then there is Eliza, who is like a breath of fresh air。 She is adventurous and loving; her optimism and grit is terrific。 She is just what the story needs to in fact "find" both Caroline and Nella。 Kind of clever if you look at it that way。 。。。more

💭 I got this book as a birthday present, it was on my wish list。The story is about two women and how their lives intertwined, and about the third one who made an unexpected discovery 200 years later。I love history in general, so I liked that one part of the story is based in 18-19th century London (as I like London very much) and the other in modern time。 The book is really nice written, easy to read, not much to add here, you need to give it a try to see if it goes with you。

Loved the story line around Nella and Eliza。 That alone would have made great book。 The story line around Caroline was filled with too many coincidences to be believable or interesting。

I think literally any other author would have done a decent job with this subject。 Hugely, massively disappointed especially since I was so excited reading the blurb。

Excellent premise, romance novel delivery。 The notion of an undiscovered space anywhere in London is just not plausible 。 One star extra for being a first novel
